HAVE YOU EVER dreamt of living in a castle? If you have, you’ve probably soon realised it would be a costly, maintenance-heavy move.

Well, consider 4 Glanmore Castle, a more manageable quarter of an architectural masterpiece with a modest two-bedroom, three-bathroom home that would satisfy your royal dreams without overwhelming you with royal upkeep.

The castle, located in Ashford, Co Wicklow, was originally built in 1760 as the family home of Irish playwright JM Synge, who was best known for penning The Playboy of the Western World, among others.

The original castle was augmented over the years, thanks to the expertise of architect Francis Johnson, best known for designing the GPO building on O’Connell Street in Dublin in the early 1800s.

Glanmore Castle has since been divided into four separate homes that all enjoy the backdrop of 200 acres of woodland trails, native trees and wildlife, as well as the Seamus Heaney loop walk that meanders by a river to a secret waterfall.

Number 4 itself certainly isn’t diminutive, spanning more than 2,000 square feet over three floors. The stunning entrance hall sports exposed wooden beams and deep casement windows, as well as a guest w/c and boot room.

An inner hall runs the length of the home, and a drawing room is the showpiece of the house, with an original fireplace and period features like the ceiling rose, cornicing and crystal chandelier. Take a long hall to the east-facing kitchen/dining room, where double doors will offer access to the gardens.

On your way up the stairs, you can pause on the spacious landing to take in the views to the summit of Carrig Mountain. Off the landing are two generous double bedrooms; one is a master with an en suite and picture window views of the estate.

Outside, you’ll find private car parking for three cars as well as a hidden garden bordered by laurel and hedging. The separate rear garden is accessed from the kitchen and sheltered by mature trees for added privacy.

While your Glanmore Castle retreat might feel secluded and private, it also offers the convenience of being located just 45 minutes from Dublin.
